What Time Is It Anyway?

Between medical tests and family events I’ve been a bit busy and haven’t posted a blog in a couple of weeks. But here’s something else that bugs the crap out of me – what time of days should a rite be celebrated. The answer to that goes back to the old days, too.  Work had to be done all day long, so celebrations usually started at Sundown and lasted til Sunrise when work began again. We no longer live in that agricultural world, more’s the pity, so most of our rites take place at night, or on the weekend. Why is this so complicated to so many?

My guess is that things get complicated when ceremonial magick & planetary computations get involved. That’s not a slam against either. Ceremonial magick is extremely precise in terms of timing, especially when planets are involved. If you’re combining systems in your rites, then timing matters, a little. However, if you are Wiccan the movement of the Moon and Sun, like in the past, are what should dominate your timing. Moon magick takes place at night! Sun magick takes place during the day! The eight great sabbats, the Wheel of the Year, follows the Sun’s yearly journey. Some of those sabbats are in the daytime, some in the nighttime. Don’t confuse yourself with other systems and clocks. And don’t stray too far from the ancient rites practiced by those agricultural folk.
