Through the economic power of Western Europe and the Unted States the 31st of January is celebrated as the secular New Year at a global level. However, all around the world cultures actually celebrate many different days as the beginning of a new reality. Cultures that follow a Luni-Solar calendar (Look it up.) have a different way of calculating the turning of the year. The Vernal, Spring, Equinox is recognized as the new year in quite a few cultures, dominated by the Islamic world. The Chinese New Year this year is on February 17th.
Economic power has given the Western World the ability to dictate when everyone turns the page on their calendar, but many cultures are clinging to their histories and celebrating their own way. Kudos to them for staying true.
